Book Reviews
A newcomer on the shelf of self-help books is “It’s Time Now” to get down to the business of choosing the life that you really want. The author, Cindy Dachuk, pictured on the front cover, founded the Titan Training Group in southern Ontario ten years ago and developed her own career as executive coach, trainer, speaker, researcher and, now, writer. Her website is accessible providing an on-line forum for professional women, a personal assessment survey and information about the offerings of the Titan group. It is clear that the target group for both this book and the Titan organization includes women who are dealing with the corporate world.
It’s Time Now provides a training program that you can pursue on your own when you have the time and the space to reflect and actively consider the questions posed. What is important to you? Who have you been blaming? Graphics designed to help you brainstorm and clarify are offered right in the midst of the text such that It’s Time Now becomes your personal workbook.
Peppered throughout the pages are quotations from notables of both gender from our generation and those past. Eleanor Roosevelt reminds us that “no one can hurt you without your consent”, while Abraham Lincoln puts forth “I reserve the right to be smarter today than I was yesterday.” It is important to be reminded that nobody has mastered life’s tasks without significant struggle!
The processes in the book encompass theories from humanist psychologists like the great Viktor Frankl, today’s Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi and even the current pop idol, Dr. Phil. It is all here.
“Ultimate Rewards”, the final chapter sets out to provide balance. Having encouraged readers to be reflective, courageous, risk-takers with a carefully defined action plan, caution is suggested. “As you begin to find your voice and purpose in life, you are, in effect, defining your horizon….yet, no matter how far or fast you travel, the horizon is not a destination you will ever reach. It continues to shift…”
The process of this book is thorough! It is unfortunate that it seems to target only corporate women!
- Susan Thomas for the Canadian Book Review Annual
There's no doubt about it: If we don’t take ourselves by the scruff of our necks, sit ourselves down, and start making some major decisions about how we really want to live, it's going to be too late. Life will pass us by, and the main impression we'll leave behind is of multi-tasking blurs of lightning.
In the midst of today's turbulence over how to be a good parent, partner, and worker, and still have some time for yourself, comes a simple message from Cindy Dachuk that you can live the life you really want. True, that's easy to say, but Dachuk backs it up with a simple, step-by-step program that helps get you there. It starts with rediscovering who you always wanted to be, moving on to determining what's really most important to you now, freeing yourself from self-limiting beliefs, and creating new energy and habits to help you get more out of life. Work, leisure, family, love - you can have it all, minus the white knuckles!
